Constipation- Food for thought By VieFit Sutra


Constipation isn't the most glamorous of topics and is a common problem - but having it sure isn't fun

What causes constipation? Well, the obvious culprits include a low fibre diet, repeatedly ignoring the urge to go, not drinking enough water, or a lack of exercise.

We think of coffee as making us race to the toilet, but did you know it can have the opposite effect, too? See what else may back you up.

Today we have identified common foods which can cause and relief constipation

Food not good for stomach

Dairy

The most common reason for constipation is dairy food. Among the foods that may block you up: too much cheese and milk. But you may not have to give up dairy -- just eat less of it and change your choices. Consume yogurt with probiotics, live lactobacillus is good for your digestive system. It may help relieve constipation.

Ready to Eat Foods

Due to our busy lifestyles we have increased consumption of ready to eat food.Those readymade meals may be convenient, but they could cause a backup. Most are low in fiber, which you need to help food move through your system. By taking time to slow down, you may speed up your digestion.

Fried Food

Fried foods are hard to resist including fried chickens and samosas but they are full of fat and are hard to digest. When food moves through your colon slowly, too much water can be taken out of it. That makes for a hard, dry stool.

Eggs

They're high in protein but low in fiber. You don't have to take them off the menu. Just add some high-fiber foods into the mix. Try an omelet with fresh spinach and tomatoes

Cupcakes and Chocolates

Sweet desserts are another weakness of Indians as the refined sugar used in the sweet desserts are low in fiber.Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruits and misthi dahi( yoghurt)

White Bread

Easy to prepare but this will give you hard, dry stools. It's made with low-fiber white flour. Go for whole-grain or multigrain toast instead.

Caffeine

A couple cups of coffee makes some people race to the bathroom, but it can have the opposite effect, too. The caffeine in coffee and soft drinks can keep your body from holding onto water, and you need H2O to stay regular. If you're constipated, skip that second cup until things pass

Alcohol

Alcohol dehydrates your body and like coffee, booze can make it hard for your body to hang onto water. That can spell trouble for your bathroom visits until you get hydrated again.

Vitamins

Vitamins in general won't cause constipation, but certain components, such as calcium and iron, can be a problem.

Depression

Ironically, the very condition that antidepressants are meant to treat—depression—can also cause constipation.

Antacids

Antacids are great for fighting heartburn, but some can cause constipation, particularly those containing calcium or aluminium.

Good Food

Prunes

Prunes are rich in fiber and very good food to avoid constipation.

Popcorn

For a savory afternoon snack, skip potato chips and have plain popcorn

Flaxseeds

Indians have history of eating a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds after every meal and they are rich source of fiber.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal offers up the best of both fiber worlds: a half-cup of dry oats contains 2 grams of insoluble and 2 grams of soluble fiber.

Aloe vera juice

The scientific benefits of aloe vera also includes benefits in constipation

Spinach

Not only does one cup of cooked spinach pack 4 grams of fiber, but it's also an excellent source of magnesium.

Water

Water is important source for relieving constipation.
